Have you ever met a bright, passionate, and engaged student whose grades or test scores just don't line up with their abilities? It's tough to watch an extremely hard working student just barely keep up, while other students who "skate by" can earn higher grades. It's even more frustrating to think that some of these very hard working, capable students may not be able to stand out throughout the college application process. This presentation will focus on the hidden issues that might keep these students from achieving their full potential. The focus will not be on disabilities, but rather on small challenges that have a big impact on study effectiveness. These issues include test anxiety, slow processing, weak working memory, and weak executive functioning skills. We'll focus on what each problem means, what signs to look for, and what college consultants can do to help students who face these challenges.

Pari Schacht, a former high school teacher, started Nurturing Wisdom in 2005. Today, Nurturing Wisdom has over 100 tutors, who tutor students in their homes in Chicago and San Francisco, and is known for having high quality and individualized tutoring in everything from test prep to executive functioning skills. Last August, Nurturing Wisdom opened their first school: The Nurturing Wisdom Academy is a private middle school in Hinsdale, IL, focused on individualized education.

Amanda Vogel's passion is helping students achieve their full potential through individualized education. She is vice president of Nurturing Wisdom Tutoring, and has a background in psychology with a master's in Special Education. Amanda has developed Nurturing Wisdom's curriculum and trainings and is also the director for the Nurturing Wisdom Academy where she directed the highly customized curriculum for middle school students. With her years of experience both in the classroom and as a tutor, her breadth of knowledge, and her particular skill for customization, Amanda acts as a resource for Nurturing Wisdom staff, tutors, and families.

Participants will learn about marketing, customer service and management strategies specific to and customized for demanding and entitled families. The presentation's information is based on peer-reviewed research and intended for participants committed to developing a deeper understanding of the challenges unique to demanding and entitled families, including those in higher socioeconomic categories and how we as professionals can best serve their unique needs.
Objective 1 To motivate participants to adopt and implement marketing, customer service, and management strategies congruent with the specialized needs of demanding and entitled families.

To challenge participant assumptions and misperceptions of demanding and entitled clients and how research demonstrates that wealth often does not equal happiness.

To educate participants on the current state of mental, emotional, and behavior issues unique to higher socioeconomic categories.

Rob Danzman, MS, NCC, LPC, is founder and clinical director of Fonthill Counseling, a counseling, case management and family services agency dedicated to working with individuals and families across the U.S., the Middle East and China. Rob also consults with therapeutic wilderness, boarding school, and behavioral health agencies.

This webinar will explore the prevalence of depression and depression disorders in teens and the degree of impairment caused by depression. Dr. Fogelson will discuss the risk for suicide in depressed teens and the co-morbidity of depression with anxiety disorders and other common psychiatric disorders of adolescence. Other topics that will be covered include:
• How to inquire about depression in teens presenting with anxiety problems.
• Psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for depression.
• Whether medications pose a risk for suicide in teens.
• How treatments works and the process of engaging teens in treatment; and that treatments can be applied not only in specialty mental health settings but also in pediatric clinics.

Speaker:
Dr. David Fogelson has been on the faculty at UCLA since 1982. A clinical professor of psychiatry, he has been a lecturer to the residents in their advanced psychopharmacology seminar. Dr. Fogelson was the medical director of the UCLA family study of schizophrenia. In his private practice he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of psychoses, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders. An expert psychopharmacologist and he offers "eclectic" psychotherapy. Dr. Fogelson is a graduate of Harvard medical school. He completed his psychiatry residency at UCLA, and a fellowship in psychopharmacology at McLean hospital in Boston.

There is no "one size fits all" when students are considering higher education. Our presenter (who is bi-national) will cover the differences between and among Canadian and U.S. postsecondary institutions, including admissions procedures, types of schools, campus culture, and affordability.

Dr. Whitney Laughlin has been in private practice since 1996. She has also worked in the Harvard College Admissions Office. A resident of Canada for nine years, she specializes in admission to U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities. Dr. Laughlin has over 30 years experience in college, university, and graduate school admission counseling, as well as in career and financial aid counseling. She has published numerous articles and given many presentations on university admissions. In 2005, she was the recipient of NACAC's "Human Relations Award," given to the individual who is "instrumental in making postsecondary educational opportunities available to historically underrepresented students." Dr. Laughlin earned a B.A. and an M.A. in Spanish and Women's Studies; an Ed.M. from Harvard University in Administration, Planning and Social Policy; and a doctorate from U.C. Berkeley in Educational Administration and Nonprofit Management.
